Gaël Monfils has won his eighth consecutive ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament match. After lifting the trophy in 2019, the Frenchman is through to the semifinals this year, leaving Daniel Evans behind: 7-6(5) 6-2.
"I was sick yesterday, but I feel better now. I’ve done everything I can and after last year’s victory I’m playing with a lot of confidence again. The chance to defend my title is there, but first of all I need to recover well for my next match.”
The 'Flying Frenchman’ was standing with his back against the wall at the end of the first set, since Evans had the opportunity to serve it out at 5-4. Monfils showed great versatility and took the lead via a tiebreak. After getting treatment for his hip, the defending champion started playing significantly better and won the second set comfortably.
"It’s a mix of luck and confidence that I’m playing so well recently,” Monfils explained. He won the ATP Tournament in Montpellier last week.
Monfils is appearing in Rotterdam Ahoy for the ninth time in his career. His next opponent, on Saturday night at 7:30pm, is Filip Krajinovic, who moved past the in-form Andrey Rublev.
